| I belong to the boroordara lions clus which was
forced on the 18th june 1997. the feeling of unity is strong amongst the members of the club and helping the community is our main intension. We do many things to help our community some of which include, the sponsoring of underprivileged children, assisting the elderly and supporting pojects in the areas of health and welfare, for example the Lions Hearing Aid project this project was co-ordinated in Papua-New Guinia and Indonesia for hearing impaired children. This is done by supplying recycled hearing aids to clinics there. This is further explained in these pamphlets I will pass around as well as additional information about my club and the Lions club in general. Australia is a young country, it's a country which welcomes people who need refuge due to war persecution and famine. As seen on this postcard,Australia is a big country compared to other countries in the world. It's current population is 19 million people. It is broken up into six states and two territories. The states are Victoria,NewSouthWaves,Queensland,WesternAustralia,SouthAustraliaand Tasmania. The territories are the Northern Territory and the Act,which stands for Australian capital territory which is situated in NewSouthWaves. Austraria has many diverse climates from the tropical raineforests to the large inland lakes maintain and rocky canyons, snow covered Alps, hundreds of kilometres of beautiful coastal beaches, forests and huge expanses of field and grazing plateas makes Austraria what it is. The Northern territory is known as the outback of Australia because of its dry and not neather conditions. Australia's history is centered around stories from the outback many indigenous tribes live there as they did many hundreds of years ago with their culture, traditions and tribal laws. They are renown for their artwork using the environment. This boomerang is just an example of the traditional artwork made by the indigenous people. These postcards I will pass around show the places where the indigenous tribes live. This postcard in particular shows how they use the environment and its sources to survive. This man is using a stick and his hands to create a fine. Some of the other postcards show how they paint their bodies and faces which is a tradition and they dance a corobary, a tribal dance. Darwin, the capital of N.T, is rerown for when the city was completely devastated by cyclone Tracey in 1974. Queensland is extremely popular for its beautiful tropical rainforests, particulary the Great Barrier Reef, which is the largest reef in the world it's beautiful coral and tropical fish attract many people from around the world, who come to swim and experience its magnificent surroundings. Tasmania was once part of the main land, however it broke off and it is how a small island. The Tasmanian peaple like it rugsered and the untouched wilderness as they see it as more commercialized. Australia has not been kind to its native in habitants in the past, but as a multicultural society, we see the need to reconcile with our indisereous people. Australia is the home of one of the largest ethnic groups and Melbourne, Victoria, is the third largest Greek speaking communities in the world. I myself am a member of the Jewish community in Melbourne although we are a minority, the majority, of Juws like in Melbourne and Sydney. Melbourne is also considered the food capital of Australia and has the highest number of restaurants per capita in the world. Japanese foods are one of the most popular foods in Melbourne and Sydney. Sydney as you may know is going to host the 2000 Olympic Games and has been doing much preparation over the past few years to make the Games one that will be remembered by all. Adelaid, the capital of South Australia, is a small old fashioned and traditional city renown for its many churches. Perth, the capital of Western Australia is also a very small city where immigrants usually stop on their way to Australia. Australia is renown all over the world for having the most unusual native animals such as, the koala, kangaroo, platypus, emu, wombat, echidra and magnificently coloured birds. This is a picture of a koala, Australia's most famous animal in Phillip island, in Victoria, many penguins can be fourd living in their natural habitat as shown in this picture. This is a kookaburra, a well known Australian bird, with colorful feathers and along beak used to catch its prey. Australia foods is how a combiation of all the ethnic groups that make up its multicultral society, but we are still famous for our particular types of passions for vegemite, meat pie and sauce, pavalova, lamingtons and anzac cookies. Here is a sample of vegemite that only Australians seem to love considering we have been grown up on it. Australia is well known over the world for being a sporting nation. Sports such as football, rugby, basketball, netball, golf, tennis, hockey, soccer and baseball are all played here. We have a horse race held every November called the Melbourne cup. In January, tennis players from all over the world come to Melbourne for the Australian Open which is played in Melbourne Park as featured on this postcard. The first grand prix of the season is staged in Melbourne around our beautiful Albert Park Lake that is about 8 kilometres from my house and I can actually hear the cars racing from my house. People from around the world love to come to Australia to see our most popular tourist attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef, commonly known as Ayers Rock in Central Australia, the Port Arthur prisors in Tasmania which housed the convicts from Britain. The Sydney Harbor Bridge and Opera House, Queenslands tropical rainforests are also popular places in Australia. There is also the beautiful weather in the tropical north, where our lakes and beaches are situated. Victoria and N.S.W are also well known for having great ski resorts and facilities. The Australian flag consists of the Union Jack, made of the crosses of St.George, St.Andrew and St. Ptrick. Under the Union Jack is a large seven parted star representing the states and territories. And accross the flag there are five stars representing the southern cross which can only be seen in the Southern Hemis Prere. Over the years there has been much debate over whether the flag shoud be changed, such debates are still occuring nowadays. There are many misconceptions about Australia, which I can gurantee being an Australian are purely myths. We speak English not Australian. Kangaroos don't run down over main streets and koalas are not kept as pets. We are not all like crocodile dundee and Australia is not all desert. These are just a few more postcards on Melbourne, the city I live in. |
